Ryan Greer has resigned as head boys’ lacrosse coach at Abington after one season to focus on his job and family.
Greer, a Cabrini College and Ridley High grad, guided the Ghosts to a 15-7 season and into the quarterfinals of the District 1 tournament.
Greer said he grudgingly had to resign because his job as a Navy contract specialist was requiring more travel and he wanted to spend more time withhis 1-month-=old daughter.
“I love the program and the kids and parents welcomed me with open arms,” said Greer. “But family comes first, then your job and then coaching.”
Greer called the 2012 Abington season a success. The year had its disappointments – losing its Suburban One National Conference title in a pair of losses to Pennsbury – and it share of successes. The Ghosts did gain wins over Germantown Academy, Downingtown East and Garnet Valley and then downed Henderson to reach the District 1 quarterfinals.
“We did very well,” Greer said. “It was a transition from one coach (veteran Randy McNeil) and we made the district playoffs, as was expected.
“It was a rollercoaster season early on, and it tested us. By the end of the season we were playing pretty good ball.”
Greer had previously served as the associate head coach for 2011 state finalist St. Joseph’s Prep and also coached for five years at Cabrini.
In high school Greer helped Ridley win two state championships (1994, 97). Greer later was a two-time all-conference player at midfield during his career (1998-01) at Cabrini.
Upon completion of his college career, Greer was Cabrini’s No. 5 all-time scorer with 120 points, ranking seventh in goals (47) and third in assists (73).
