An Eastern Pennsylvania women’s lacrosse tradition since 1992, the Abington Play day brings together female youth ranging from 8 years to 14 years of age (3rd grade to 8th grade).
This event was the vision of Dee Cross: Hall of Fame inductee, world champion, the former Abington High head lacrosse Coach, and currently the Upper Dublin coach. Cross wanted a day to celebrate the game of women’s lacrosse and create an opportunity for the coming together of youth from different areas all in the name of good natured competition.
Held annually on the Saturday before Mother’s Day every May, the Abington Play Day hosts between 80 to 100 teams in three age categories: 3rd/4th grade, 5th/6th grade, and 7th/8th Grade. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, May 12. The 1000 players and 1000+ accompanying family members create a festival atmosphere as they fill out the Abington High School/Junior High School campus.
The day also includes food and clothing concession. Food concession is run by and helps fund the Abington High School Girls program. Clothing concession helps fund the Abington Girls Lacrosse Club, the Play day sponsor.
Participating teams come from Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
In 2008, the Abington Play Day, in response to the evolution and growth of Women’s Lacrosse added a competitive tournament at the 7th / 8th A Grade level. Last year it added a 5th / 6th Grade level competitive tournament. To this point, the nature of the games was scoreless “friendly contests.” While this tradition is still a part of the Play Day, there is also, for those that desire, the satisfaction of crowning an annual champion.
