Episcopal Academy rising sophomore attackman-midfielder Curtis Zappala has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Maryland.

Curtis Zappala log:

Curtis Zappala

High School: Episcopal Academy

Position: Attack/Middie

College Choice: University of Maryland

Club Affiliation: Dukes LC

Major Lacrosse Honors: Episcopal Academy Varsity Starter at Attack and EMO as a Freshman, 13 Goals and 23 Assists for 2012 season (varsity assist leader), Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip Rising Sophomore Camp 2012; Offensive MVP for Crab Feast 2012 National Championship

Expected college major: “At this point and time, I am undecided.”

Why did you choose Maryland: “Maryland has been my top school of interest since visiting with my older brother, Brian, in the spring. After spending the day on campus for my second visit, I knew Maryland was the best fit for me both academically and athletically. There is a true sense of family that surrounds Coach (John) Tillman, Coach (Kevin) Warne, Coach (Ryan) Moran and the Maryland lacrosse community. At the end of our meetings, I told Coach Tillman that I wanted to finalize my decision. I am looking forward to the experience.”

Also considered: UNC, Denver, Duke

High school team’s outlook for 2013: “Our 2012 season has left us with high expectations for the future at EA. While we lose 12 seniors who were major contributors to the success of our team, we return key underclassmen including several starters for 2013. Our program is confident we have taken the next step and we look to continue the success that our senior class has established.”

Other Comments: I would like to thank my high school coaches at Episcopal Academy, Coach (Andy) Hayes, Coach (Marty) Kupprion and Coach (Will) Gibbs for their confidence in me this season; and my Episcopal Academy lacrosse teammates and the community as a whole. I would like to thank my Duke’s LC coaches, Coach Ebe (Helm) and Coach (Jason) Christmas, for their guidance. Coach Ebe helped advised me throughout the process. Finally, I would like to thank my family for all their support and time that they have invested in my lacrosse experience.”
