Springfield-Delco rising senior defender Michelle Gildea has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Towson University.
Gildea was a Second Team Central League selection this year, helping the Cougars share the league title with three teams while also reaching the District 1 semifinals and state quarterfinals.
Gildea plays club lacrosse for the Phantastix.
She will play for coach Sonia LaMonica at Towson, which went 11-7 and reached the Colonial Athletic Association finals this year
“I really liked the coaches,” said Gildea. “They made me feel welcome. I liked the campus and I could see myself going there. Plus, it’s close to home and my parents can see me play.”
Gildea said Springfield-Delco exceeded expectations in 2011.
“I thought the season went really well; we didn’t expect to go so far since we had such a young team and started so many freshmen,” she said. “We will only graduate three seniors so we have a good chance of having a good team again.”
