Shipley School has named former Philadelphia Wings World Champion Dave Stilley as an assistant coach and player development coordinator for the Gators varsity boys’ lacrosse team.
Stilley, the former Duke University and Haverford School All-American defenseman, recently stepped away from his role as assistant general manager of the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League. The 11-year pro veteran of the NLL spent five consecutive seasons with the Wings, later moved to the Colorado Mammoth, retiring at the end of the 2007 season after wainning three World Championships as a player.
Two seasons later, Stilley spent a lone season in NY on the NLL’s Titans before stepping away from pro level again as a player. Stilley also spent four years playing in the MLL on the NJ Pride, where he was a team captain.
Stilley was a 3-sport standout at The Haverford School before graduating as an All-American in lacrosse and as one of the top wrestlers and football players in Inter-Ac League history. At Duke, Stilley was a member of the 1995 ACC Championship lacrosse squad and 1997s NCAA Semi-Final squad; the first Duke team to reach that level of success
Shipley Athletic Director and Boys’ Lacrosse Coach Mark Duncan on Stilley:
“Dave has a great passion for teaching lacrosse to the youth players at Shipley and in the Main Line area around Shipley,” said Shipley coach Mark Duncan. “His emphasis on the core skills and development of the knowledge of the basics of the game is a breath of fresh air in the rapidly expanding lacrosse hotbed of Philadelphia.
“The Shipley School is very excited to have Dave join our coaching staff and build on our recent success while developing our current varsity players as well as our Middle School and Lower School youth lacrosse players.”
Shipley is coming off an impressive 3-year run of winning consecutive Friends Schools League Championships with a 21-0 record in league play during those years. The team boasted records of 16-2 in 2011, 16-2 in 2010 and 17-3 in 2009. The Gators return nine seniors for the 2012 season, including recent NCAA commitments from senior Mike Litner (Amherst College) and Mac Gallagher (Lafayette College).
