Saturday’s men’s D1 college roundup: Hopkins (La Salle) leads No. 2 Notre Dame past Villanova; St. Joe’s falls

Freshman attackman Westy Hopkins (La Salle) broke a 7-7 game with a pair of goals and finished with three overall to spark No. 2 Notre Dame to a 12-8 BIG EAST victory over No. 8 Villanova Saturday in men’s lacrosse.

The Irish improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the league. The Wildcats, who had lost to No. 1 Syracuse last week, dropped to 7-3 and 0-2. in front of 2,655 in Arlotta Stadium.

Villanova was led by the three goal, one assist effort of junior CJ Burke and defensively by senior Brian Karalunas and junior Chris Creighton (Malvern Prep), both of whom collected four ground balls and three caused turnovers for the afternoon.

Hopkins put Notre Dame on top for good (8-7) with 1:43 left in the third quarter. Brenneman assisted on the goal. Notre Dame senior Jake Marmul won the ensuing faceoff and then fed Hopkins who scored to make it a 9-7 affair with 1:31 left to play in the period. A Michael Vigilante goal sliced the Irish lead to one (9-8) by the end of the third quarter.

The Fighting Irish defense kept Villanova off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. Brenneman’s second goal put Notre Dame up 10-8 with two minutes gone by in the final period. Hopkins completed his hat trick with 2:14 remaining, while Colin Igoe did so with 1:52 left.

UMass 16, St. Joseph’s 9

Junior Matt Dougherty (Conestoga) led the Hawks’ scoring with three goals while sophomore Kyle Williams tallied two goals and four assists and Steve Dunn (Malvern Prep) scored twice.

Princeton 5, Brown 4, 4 OT

Tucker Shanley scored in the fourth overtime to give the Tigers (2-5) the Ivy League win.

Providence 8, Lafayette 6

Freshman goalie Andrijko Andrusko (Holy Ghost Prep) had eight saves for the Leopards (2-7) in defeat.

Maryland 12, Virginia 7

Owen Blye (Downingtown East) had two goals and three assists and Niko Amato (La Salle) made 12 saves to lead the Terps to the ACC win.

John Haldy (Haverford School) had a goal and an assist for the Cavaliers.

Mount St. Mary’s 12, Robert Morris 11

Daniel Stranix (Ridley) had two goals and two assists to help the Mount win the NEC game.
