Phillylacrosse.com Girls’ Rankings: A new team will be crowned PIAA champion this year

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament begins Wednesday with seven teams from District 1 as well as District 12 champion Archbishop Carroll and District 11 champ Emmaus shooting for a state title. Two-time defending champion Radnor did not make the field.

This week’s rankings:

1, Downingtown East (22-1) – The Cougars won their first District 1 championship and open PIAA play against Upper Dublin at West Chester East at 7 p.m. The Cougars defeated Upper Dublin, 12-6, in the district quarterfinals. Prev: No. 1

2. Garnet Valley (20-3) – The District 1 runner-up Jaguars got no favors in the brackets by drawing Central League foe Harriton, the No. 5 seed out of District 1, in the first round at West Chester East at 5 p.m. Prev: No. 3

3, Springfield-Delco (20-3) – The Cougars placed third in District 1 and open against District 11 champ Emmaus at Nazareth High at 7 p.m. Prev: No. 2

4, Archbishop Carroll (17-3) – The Patriots won their 11th straight Catholic League crown and as the District 12 champion will meet Boyertown in the first round at Plymouth Whitemarsh at 4 p.m. Carroll defeated Boyertown, 16-13, back on April 19. Prev: No. 6

5, Episcopal Academy (17-4) –
EA finished as the undefeated champion of the Inter-Ac League and the winner of the Pennsylvania Independent school tournament. Prev: No. 5

6, Great Valley (19-3) – The Patriots placed fourth in District 1 and open against District 3 champion and undefeated Manheim Township at Cumberland Valley High at 5 p.m. Prev: No. 4

7, Harriton (20-3) – The Rams placed fifth in District 1 and open against Central League rival Garnet Valley at West Chester East at 5 p.m. Prev: No. 7

8. Boyertown (19-6) – The Bears placed sixth in District 1 and open state play against District 12 champ Archbishop Carroll at Plymouth Whitemarsh at 4 p.m. Prev: No. 8

9, Notre Dame (14-4) – The Irish placed second in the Inter-Ac League. Prev: No. 9

10, Upper Dublin (17-6) – The Cardinals advanced to the PIAA tourney for the first time and have the task of facing District 1 champ and No. 1 ranked Downingtown East at West Chester East at 7 p.m. Prev: No. 10

Honorable Mention: Archbishop Wood (13-6), Conestoga (12-7), Council Rock North (15-5), Haverford High (12-8), Hatboro-Horsham (16-3), Merion Mercy (15-5), North Penn (18-2), Radnor (14-6), Strath Haven (12-7), Villa Maria Academy (15-4)
