Tom Romano, President of Lower Bucks Lacrosse, announced that the LBL Scholarship Committee has awarded the 2011 Jerry Middlemiss and Stephanie Magnone Scholarship Awards to Pennsbury senior Katie Fields and La Salle senior Jack Bogorowski.
The scholarships were awarded at Lower Bucks Lacrosse’s end-of-season celebration, Lax-A-Palooza, on June 7th at Middletown Community Park in Langhorne.
The Jerry Middlemiss Scholarship Award and the Stephanie Magnone Scholarship Award, are named in honor of the founders of the Lower Bucks Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse programs. Both founders are coaches who set high standards of excellence both on the field, and in life.
Fields is a four-year member at Pennsbury and ranked No. 1 out of 840 students in her class. She is a National Merit Commended Scholar and recipient of the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency Certificate of Merit.
Fields is a member of the National Honor Society, the German National Honor Society and has received the AATB Ehrenurkunde for Outstanding Achievement in German award as well as the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Award for outstanding achievement in the study of German language and literature.
Fields also is a scholar athlete with a 4.0 GPA (a weighted 4.74 GPA). She was selected as a member of the 2011 Suburban One League Second Team. Fields is a multisport scholar-athlete that was also a member Pennsbury’s basketball, field hockey, cross country and winter track teams at various points in her high school career.
When not in the classroom or playing on the Pennsbury fields you might find her riffing on the saxophone as a member of the Pennsbury High School Concert Band and Woodside Church’s Youth Orchestra.
She also finds the time to support charitable endeavors as well. Miles to Montauk for Multiple Myeloma, a bike fundraiser, was but one of her causes throughout her high school years.
“Katie is a high achiever not only in the classroom and on the athletic field, but also in the community. She underscores the values that are intrinsic to our program – achieving your personal best while leading by example,” according to the LBL Scholarship Committee.
Bogorowski was a midfielder for the regular season undefeated (Philadelphia Catholic League) Explorers. He was named First Team to the All-Catholic Team. He will be playing Division I lacrosse for Johns Hopkins University where he plans to pursue studies in Economics. He is a scholar-athlete with a 3.65 GPA and National Honor Society member.
“Jack demonstrates character and tenacity on and off the field,” said the LBL Scholarship Committee in their recommendation of Jack.
Bogorowski has overcome much in his short eighteen years and serves as an outstanding role model for our younger players. He has battled injury and serious disease that would have hobbled a person of less character. In Jack’s own words from his essay submitted to the Lower Bucks Lacrosse Scholarship Committee, “John Locke said, ‘Character is who you are when no one is looking.’ I am a humble athlete because I have been humbled by circumstances beyond my control.
“I am an empathetic person because I have experienced defeat in a more profound sense than the score on the board. I am blessed because not everyone is as fortunate as I have been. I am determined because I have learned that determination can pay off. I am a loyal friend and teammate because I have learned the hard way what it means to stick by someone through bad times and good. And I am faithful, because faith sustains.”
Honorable mentions were awarded to: Daniel Marr of Pennsbury, James Roessner of Neshaminy, and Rebecca Radzinski of Pennsbury.
