Men’s recruits: Haverford School’s Stewart heads list of incoming freshmen at Harvard

Harvard men’s lacrosse coach Chris Wojcik has announced the addition of 11 freshmen to the Crimson lacrosse team.

Wojcik, who will be in his second year as the head coach, has added three defensemen, four midfielders, three attackmen and one goalkeeper for the upcoming campaign. Five of the eleven newcomers have been ranked in the ESPN Rise top 50.

The student-athletes have been recruited from six states with the majority representing New York (four) and Massachusetts (three). One recruit has come from New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Texas.

“I am pleased to announce the Harvard lacrosse class of 2015. We are fortunate to welcome a group of high character individuals who have excelled on and off the field. The class is strong at each position, and we expect the group to make an immediate impact on our team and program. I am looking forward to the welcoming everyone to campus later this month as they embark on their college careers.”

Harvard finished the 2011 season with a 10-6 overall record and was 3-3 in Ivy League play and advanced to the Ivy League tournament final for the first time in program history. The Crimson was ranked No. 15 by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and No. 16 by Nike/Inside Lacrosse in their respective final polls.

Grove Stewart/Malvern, Pa./The Haverford School/Midfielder

Four-year letterwinner in lacrosse and two-year letterwinner in soccer … Helped lead Fords to 23-0 season, Inter-Ac League title, Inter-Ac Invitational crown and spot on top of every national poll … Has a rich family history of college athletics as his cousin, Steve Feather, graduated from Bucknell in 2003 and played soccer and his cousin, Scott Feather, graduated from Wake Forest in 2005 and played basketball … His father, Bill, was a member of the lacrosse team at Duke and graduated in 1983.

Jack Breit/Essex Fells, N.J./Delbarton School/Defenseman
Three year starter on defense for the lacrosse team at Delbarton … Also bowled and played football during his high school career … Named first team All-Gibbs and second team all-state for lacrosse during junior year … Named first team all-county, first team all-state, All-American, New Jersey Defenseman of the Year, and Morris County player of the year during senior campaign … Led team to MCT and Non-public A state championship during senior season.

Brian Fischer/Garden City, N.Y./Garden City High School/Defenseman
Named Nassau County All-American three times in lacrosse … Only the second lacrosse player in Garden City history to receive Nassau County All-American selection as a sophomore … Named first-team All-Tri-State, first team All-Long Island, Nassau County Championship defenseman of the game, and Nassau County long pole Defenseman of the Year … Rated No. 5 defenseman and No. 34 overall player in the class of 2011 by ESPN Rise … Led team to state finals during his junior and senior seasons … Finalist for Defenseman of the Year and named second-team All-Long Island selection during his junior year … Also a member of the football team at Garden City … Rushed for over 1,000 yards as a junior and served as team captain as a senior … Member of the National Honor Society … Delta Epsilon Phi German Consulate’s book award winner in 2008 … Named to the Principal’s List for sixteen consecutive quarters.

Jake Gambitsky/Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh High School/Goalkeeper
Lettered four times in lacrosse and two times in football at Wantagh … Named U.S. Lacrosse All-American and Under Armour All-American in lacrosse as a senior … All-Nassau County and Academic All-Nassau County as a junior and senior … Rated as the No. 1 goalie and No. 10 overall player in the class of 2011 by ESPN Rise … Selected all-conference in football in 2010 … Led lacrosse team to Nassau County Class B championship in 2010 … Named U.S. Army national scholar-athlete award winner in 2011 … Member of the marching band, wind ensemble and jazz band … Winner of the John Philip Sousa Band Award in 2011 … Father, Ed, graduated from North Carolina State in 1979 and was a two-time captain of the lacrosse team.

Four year starter on the lacrosse team and three year starter on the football team at Chaminade … Two-time lacrosse team MVP … Named all-conference in lacrosse two times…Chosen as an Under Armour All-American in 2011 … Named Nassau Suffolk Catholic High School Athletic Association Midfielder of the Year in 2011 … Selected as Channel 12 scholar athlete in 2011 … ESPN Rise ranked him as the No. 13 midfielder and No. 49 overall player in the class of 2011 … Member of the U.S. Men’s U19 team to compete in the U19 Men’s World Championship in Finland in 2012 … Member of the National Honor Society and honor roll … Selected as a Newsday scholar-athlete in 2011.

Keegan Michel/Westminster, Md./McDonogh School/Midfielder
