St. Augustine Prep (N.J.) rising senior midfielder Steve Pontrello has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of North Carolina.

Steve Pontrello log:

Steve Pontrello

High School: St. Augustine Prep
Graduation Year: 2012
Position: Midfield
College Choice: University of North Carolina
Club Affiliation: Tri State
Lacrosse honors: Made the USA U-19 team last month, made the All-American team twice, 2011 First Team All-State, and First Team All-South Jersey twice
Service projects: Raised money for the Headstrong Foundation.

Why did you choose UNC? “I visited the school and I loved it, the campus is really beautiful. The coaching staff and the players make it the best place to play lacrosse in, I feel like I can really help them out in lacrosse and get a great education.”

What is your HS team’s outlook for next year? “I think we’re going to be really good. We have a great senior class and I think we can make it back to the state championship, which we lost in the two previous seasons. I think we should be really strong and hopefully we can win one.”

On making the USA U-19 team: “It was a great tryout, amazing competition, and I’m just happy to be selected.”

Other comments: Pontrello would like to thank his high school coach JC Valore, his Tri-State coach MV Whitlow, his parents and his brother.
