Haverford School senior midfielder Nate Volpert has made a verbal commitment to play at Richmond University in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA).
Volpert, who played club lacrosse for Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) until his sophomore year has been a contributor for a Haverford School team that is 22-0 and ranked No. 1 in the country after winning the Inter-Ac League championship.
The Fords and earned a berth in the Inter-Ac Invitational finals Wednesday (7 p.m.) vs. Malvern Prep at Cabrini College.
Volpert will study in business or finance at Richmond, which is moving up to the MCLA Division I level next fall from club status. The Spiders are coached by first-year mentor Glenn Carter, the former head coach at Ursinus College.
“I chose Richmond because of the high academic quality,” he said. “I wanted to go to Richmond because of the location too, I like the south a lot.”
“At Haverford there’s around 400 kids total and Richmond is very similar in class size. I was really attracted because of the smaller class sizes.”
Volpert was awarded the Presidential service award for completing over 100 hours of community service at Haverford School. “I feel like I’ve been privileged so I want to do anything I can to give back to the community,” he said.
Carter has brought in three more Philly seniors to join his growing program: Malvern Prep goalie Ryan McDevitt, Germantown Academy defenseman Sean Robins and Allentown Central Catholic long stick midfielder Brian Topper.
Volpert has enjoyed being on a team ranked No. 1 all year. But the focus now is to gear for the challenge of facing arch-rival Malvern Prep for the third time this year.
“It’s definitely fun being ranked No. 1,” Volpert said. “We get very hyped because we know that the teams playing against us treat it like it’s the Super Bowl.
“We need to continue to play to our capability against Malvern Prep.”
