Scott Perri scored five of Drexel’s six fourth quarter goals as the Dragons (2-3) defeated visiting Saint Joseph’s today at Vidas Field, 10-5, in a Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.

Drexel trailed by a goal entering the fourth period, but outscored the Hawks, 6-0, in the final 15 minutes of the contest. The Hawks fell to 0-4, but played their best game of the year.

Saint Joseph’s led the game, 5-4, entering the fourth quarter and was outshooting Drexel, 17-16 at that point. The Dragons struggled with turnovers and were also down a man six times heading into the final frame.

Perri tied the game three minutes into the quarter and then put the Dragons ahead for good at the 7:45 mark when he dove across the front of the net and beat the Hawks’ keeper to his left. On the ensuing face off, Devin Thomas won the draw cleanly, fed Robert Church, who set up Perri for a one timer to give Drexel two goals in seven seconds and a one-goal lead. Church added an insurance goal at the 6:43 mark and Perri closed the scoring with two more goals in the final five minutes. Drexel outshout Saint Joseph’s, 14-2, in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks led by as many as two goals at one point in the second quarter. Matt Dougherty (Conestoga) and Kevin Dougherty put the Hawks ahead 4-2 and, after Dan Layfield’s second goal of the game, Steve Dunn (Malvern Prep) scored with 5:41 left in the half to make it a 5-3 Saint Joseph’s lead. Aaron Prosser cut the Hawks’ lead to one when he scored with 4:21 to play before intermission.

Saint Joseph’s opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first quarter. Johnny Simanski and Kyle Williams each had unassisted goals for the Hawks. The Drexel offense finally got going in the final four minutes of the quarter. Layfield and Nick Trizano each scored for Drexel to tie the game.

Drexel’s defense held the Hawks off the board for the final 35:41 of the game and successfully killed off all seven penalties. The Dragons controlled the “x” the entire game, winning 15 of their 18 attempts. Devin Thomas was 11-for 14 with five ground balls, while fellow freshman Michael Roe was perfect on face-offs in four attempts.

Chris Moffa turned aside 12 Drexel shots in the Saint Joseph’s cage. Drexel’s Mark Manos (Salesianum School) made just five saves in the game.
