Catholic Academies girls’ roundup: Villa Maria tightens grip on first place with 11-10 win over Merion Mercy; Mount tops Sacred Heart

Carolyn Griesser scored the game-winner with 2:18 to play as host Villa Maria Academy edged arch-rival Merion Mercy, 11-10, today in a first-place girls’ lacrosse showdown in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies.

The Hurricanes improved to 7-2 overall and 7-0 in the AACA, while Merion Mercy fell to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the conference. VMA defeated the Bears, 7-5, earlier in the year.

Elise Bendnelli led the attack for Villa Maria – which was down 7-4 at halftime – with three goals and one assist while Jenna Mertz contributed two goals, three assists and six draw controls. Catherine Bendinelli scored two goals and added an assists and Erin Kelly scored twice while Maddie McTigue had five groundballs and three caused turnovers to pace the defense. Erin Kelly scooped four groundballs.

Madison Connor led Merion Mercy with three goals and Bonnie McShane had a goal and three assists.

Mount St. Joseph 17, Sacred Heart 6

Olivia Gannon pumped in six goals and Burke Brabson added four while Emilee Ehret had two goals and two assists and Stevie Wells contributed two goals, an assists and seven draw controls for the Mount (4-3, 4-1) in the AACA win.

Stephanie Finley had two goals and three assists and Claire Fitzpatrick tallied two goals for Sacred Heart.
