Rob Wertz scored off a feed from Mark Stratton with 1:47 left in overtime to lift Manheim Township to a stunning 17-16 victory tonight over Hempfield in the District 3 boys’ lacrosse championship game.
The Blue Streaks (21-1), the No. 2 ranked team in the PA Media Rankings in the PIAA, advance to the state tourney as the top seed in the district and will play District 1 third-place finisher Downingtown West at Cumberland Valley HS at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the first round.
Hempfield (20-3) will meet Delaware Valley – the winner of the District 2/4 region – in the first round Wednesday.
The Black Knights had used a 5-0 surge at the close of the second period to take a 7-5 halftime lead. Hempfield held a 12-9 edge heading into the final period, but Manheim Township surged ahead with a 4-0 spurt and led, 16-14, with 2:41 to play until Hempfield scored two late goals to send it into OT.
Quint Miller led the Blue Streaks with six goals, while Tyler Karpinski had three goals.
Michael Ondrusek, Matt Senft and Nick Valentino led Hempfield with four goals each.
