The Friars (11-5) finished 5-3 in the Inter-Ac, tied with GA, which had defeated the Friars, 6-1 last month.

Malvern Prep trailed in the game, 7-6 when the Patriots’ Billy Oppenheimer scored early in the final period.

But MP responded as Mike Dougherty plucked a bouncing rebound off a save by GA goalie Jake Adoni and stuffed it to tie the game at 7-7 with 8:43 left. Malvern’s Graeme Weaver scored his second of the game from Vince Travaglinii at 6:59 for the winning goal.

Travaglini finished with two goals and an assist while Weaver scored twice and Drew Kennedy won 15 of 19 face-offs.

Germantown Academy, which fell to 14-3, got two goals and three assists from Beau Jones and two goals from Reid Weber. Adoni made 12 saves in goal.

Malvern jumped out in the 1st quarter to a 2-0 lead by goals from Travaglini and Russell Atkinson. GA responded as long pole Bobby Tait scored on a man-up situation at 2:16.

But Kennedy won the ensuing faceoff outright, broke down field, dodged and hit a cutting Keith Dreyer to make it 3-1 Malvern Prep . GA, using an effective two man game behind the MP goal, saw Jones score from Weber at 1:05 to cut the lead to 3-2 end of the first period.

Malvern Prep forged a 6-3 lead at halftime, but GA dominated the third period as Jones, Connor Crump and Jones again scored to tie the game at 6-6.

Malvern Prep sophomore goalie Matt Barrett (six saves) made several key stops in the final period.

“GA had a great comeback in the third quarter,” he said. “But our ‘D’ locked it down in the fourth, forcing them out where I could see their shots much better.”

“Our defense and goalies, plus the dominance of Drew Kennedy at the face-off X won this game”, said MP coach Dave Metzbower.
