Glen Ridge (N.J.) senior LSM/defenseman John Winchell has made a verbal commitment to play.

John Winchell log:

John Winchell (r)

High School: Glen Ridge (N.J.)

Graduation Year: 2012

Position: LSM/defenseman

College Choice: St. Joseph’s University

Club Affiliation: Decicco Lacrosse (NJ)

Major lacrosse honors: Honorable Mention Gibbs Diision, Third Team All-Essex County, Second Team All-Junior Essex County, Second Team All-State Group 1, member of Group 1 state champions (15-4)

Academic honors: Hispanic Honor Society, Honor Roll

What will you major in/study? Considering Business or Sports Marketing

Why did you choose school? “I felt that St. Joe’s offered the greatest combination of academics and athletics. The staff (new head coach Taylor Wray and assistants Dan and Mike Keating) has a lot of experience and is very knowledgeable of the game, which will help the program tremendously. They are also a team on the rise and can be a top tier program in a couple years.”

What is your HS team’s outlook for next year?
“We want to build as a team. We did lose some great players, so we just want to get better every day. Now I feel our program is becoming a program to reckon with and one that is known. We want to be able to contend for a state championship year in and your out.”

Other comments: “I want to thank my parents for putting me in the right place, always being positive and helping me through the process. I want to thank (Glen Ridge) coach Carl Houser for doing everything day in and day out; and a mentor, Alex Lopes. “
