North Penn rising senior midfielder Brenda McDermott has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Temple University.

McDermott was a Second Team Suburban One Continental Conference pick this year and helped lead the Maidens to the league championship and an 18-2 record. She collected 64 goals, 28 assists, 57 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers last year and served as a captain.

McDermott, also a captain for the North Penn basketball team, represented the Philly 3 team at the Women’s National Lacrosse Tournament at Stony Brook University.

McDermott plans to major in accounting or criminal justice.

“I knew that I wanted to go to a school in the city and Temple’s campus was exactly what I was looking for,” she said. “It is close to home so I will be able to see my family, and close to my sister (Lauren), who plays lacrosse at LaSalle.”

This year the Owls were 7-10 overall and 4-3 in the Atlantic-10 Conference under coach Bonnie Rosen.

“I like coach Rosen and I got along really well with the girls,” said McDermott. “When I went down for my visit I felt at home. By the second or third visit I was very familiar with the campus, city, and some of the team too.”

McDermott is confident that the Maidens will again be the conference favorite in 2012.

“Next season I hope to win the Continental conference again, go further in the district playoffs and reach the state playoffs,” she said. “We will be losing seven seniors this year so we will need to work hard in the off season to uphold the standards that last year’s seniors have set.”
