Drexel’s Whitney Johnson made 11 saves and held Saint Joseph’s scoreless in the first half as the Dragons defeated the Hawks, 8-2, in a non-conference game today at Vidas Field.

Junior defender Sarah Bauer (West Chester East) caused six turnovers and picked up three groundballs as a stingy Drexel defense stymied the visitors. On the offensive end, Katie Lawson contributed four goals while Mariana Uribe (Notre Dame) added a pair of scores. The win moved Drexel to 4-0 on the season while the Hawks dropped to 1-1.

The first half saw both teams’ offenses struggle with the game’s first goal coming more than 13 minutes into the contest as Lawson dodged a defender then found the net. Uribe scored just over three minutes later to give Drexel a 2-0 lead.

The second half saw Drexel’s offense come to life as just 18 seconds into the frame, Becca Drylie-Perkins sent a pass from the right side of the goal to a wide-open Amanda Gregg (Upper Dublin) on the left side who finished the play. Less than seven minutes later, Lawson converted a free-position shot to give Drexel a 4-0 lead and begin a barrage on the Hawks’ net.

Freshman Kelli Joran (Downingtown East) tacked on a goal just over two minutes later while Lawson connected on another free-position shot with 19 minutes left in the game. Less than a minute later Uribe scored on a pass from Nicole Musto on a play that looked similar to Gregg’s goal to open the half.

Just 27 seconds later, Lawson broke free toward the net and tallied her fourth of the game to wrap up a 4-0 run over a span of just 3:08 and give the Dragons an 8-0 advantage.

After more than 44 minutes of shutout defense from Drexel, Jen Peters finally beat Johnson to put the Hawks on the board. Peters added a second goal but it would the last strike of the game. After her stellar performance, Johnson was lifted with less than 10 minutes remaining for Rachael Behrndt (Downingtown East). who made two saves while not allowing a goal.

Saint Joseph’s outshot Drexel, 27-14, for the game but were 0-for-8 on free-position shots with the majority turned away by the Dragons’ goalies. The Hawks earned seven draws to Drexel’s five with Nicole Musto controlling four of the Dragons’ five draws. Lawson’s four-goal performance gives her 15 goals on the season as she remained the Colonial Athletic Association leader in goals and points.
