Pottstown senior midfielder Kasey Mock made a verbal commitment Tuesday to play Division I lacrosse at Syracuse University.
Mock scored 90 goals last year and earned Honorable Mention All-American and Second Team All-Phillylacrosse.com honors. Pottstown finished 12-6, reaching the Pioneer
Athletic Conference semifinals while also advancing to the District 1 tournament.
Mock is also an outstanding student. She earned Academic All-American last year and was named to the PAC-10 All-Academic Team. She also had 57 groundballs in 2009 and played on the Philly 1 team that claimed the title at the US Lacrosse National Tournament in May. She enters her senior year with 199 career goals.
Mock, who plays club lacrosse for PA Express, joins Upper Dublin attack Amy Cross as Syracuse recruits. Syracuse is coached by pro legend and former Philadelphia Wing Gary Gait, who guided the Orange to a 14-5 record in 2009 and a berth in the NCAA quarterfinals.
Mock committed much later than many of the other top players in the area. She committed to Duquesne in the fall, but later de-committed and then began to worry she would not find a Division I college to meet her goals.
But Syracuse entered the picture and the pieces fit perfectly.
“After everything that happened with Duquesne, I didn’t think anything would work out,” she said. “I kind of just did what I could and e-mailed schools I thought I’d be interested in. Syracuse e-mailed me back and I started talking to them. I loved it when I went on my visit and it seemed like the right place for me.
“Obviously, I was super late in the (recruiting) game. Maybe I was meant to be late in the game. I ended up happy. I was smiling the whole time I was on the phone with coach Gait (when she verbally committed). I was really excited and relieved.”
Mock said she loved the big-time atmosphere at Syracuse, She plans to major in Elementary Education.
“I wasn’t sure exactly what I was looking for in the whole college search,” she said. “But when I went to Syracuse, I liked that it is such a big campus, the athletics are great and it’s a great academic school. I love the school spirit and how everyone gets decked out for basketball games. It’s something I really think is cool.
“After meeting with (Gait), I really couldn’t believe it all happened.”
Mock is confident the Trojans can again challenge for a league and district playoff spot.
“We lost a few key players,” she said. “But this year we have all done stuff outside of Pottstown lacrosse and worked hard. There are a lot of good underclassmen that seem to have a lot of athletic ability.”
