Germantown Friends senior goalie Samie Francis has signed a national letter of intent to play Division I lacrosse at Howard University in Washington D.C.
Francis, a captain, has been a key in helping the Tigers get off to a 7-2 start as they try to win their third straight Friends Schools League championship.
Howard has a young program that competes in the National Lacrosse Conference. Francis, a standout in the classroom who also is involved in several service projects, will major in Biology and plans to become a neurosurgeon.
“They have a relatively new program and I’d like to be a part of something like that,” she said. “I also like the coach, she is a great person.”
Howard is coached by former Virginia great Jessica Morgan.
Francis said one of her role models helped guide her to study medicine.
“I like science and I have a personal relationship with someone important in my life who is a physician,” she said,
Francis said she began playing goalie as a freshman.
“I decided to try something different,” she said. “I played on the field since first grade, but when I started as a goalie I had the knack for it.”
