Recent Friends’ Central graduate Kaitlyn McCaffrey (defender) has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Muhlenberg College.
McCaffrey was a first-team Friends Schools League selection in 2010 when she helped
the Phoenix claim the league championship.
McCaffrey, who played club lacrosse for Ultimate Goal, plans to study in a pre-med program. She will join Friends’ Central teammate Emily Belkoff (goalie) at Muhlenberg.
“I was interested in a pre-med program and their program is unbelievable,” said McCaffrey. “And I have the opportunity to play lacrosse.”
McCaffrey said she liked the cozy atmosphere at Muhlenberg, located in nearby Allentown,
“The school is very similar to Friends’ Central,” she said. “It’s a little bigger, but has that same general feel, and that’s what I like about it.”
McCaffrney, who wished to thanks her coaches at Friends Central for helping her reach her potential, said the 2010 season was a success due to the team’s overall dedication. The Phoenix players, she said, committed themselves to winning the league title after being eliminated in an overtime loss to Shipley in the league semifinals the previous year.
Friends’ Central capped its 12-5 season with a 13-6 victory over Shipley in the semifinals and a 13-2 triumph over defending champion Germantown Friends in the finals. McCaffrey had an amazing 18 forced turnovers in the two playoff games.
“It really did start after that loss,” she said. “I t was such a devastating loss. We did fall leagues, winter leagues and literally work all year. There was a lot of team bonding and fund raising for our Florida trip.
“All that in combination led to us starting off the season on the right note. It continued and we finished with a bang.”
