Bishop Shanahan senior midfielder Gina Eberwein has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I lacrosse at Long Island University (Brooklyn).

Eberwein, who also plays defense, was a third team All-Ches-Mont League pick last year for the Eagles. She tallied 10 goals, 16 assists, 43 ground balls, 16 caused turnovers and 12 draw controls in 2009.

Eberwein also is a standout field hockey player first team All-Ches-Mont this fall) and plays lacrosse for SEPA.

At LIU, Eberwein, who is involved in student council and is a member of the National Honor Society, plans to major in Occupational Therapy.

“I chose [LIU] because it had my major,” said Eberwein, who has a 4.0 GPA. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do at first, but I wanted to do something with special needs, so occupational therapy was good for me.”

Eberwein met with the coaches and the team during her official visit in October. “I love the team,” she said. “And the coaches – they are all really fun.”

LIU is coached by second-year mentor Heather Levins, a 2003 UConn grad. Eberwein follows another Bishop Shanahan grad to LIU, senior midfielder Kristen Scheerer. Eberwein also is one of three Philly girls to choose LIU; the other two are Pottsgrove’s Ashley Delaney and Downingtown West’s Trisha Yeoell.

Eberwein is optimistic entering her senior year with the Eagles. “I am excited,” said Eberwein.  “Playing at Shanahan has been awesome.”
