Archbishop Carroll junior attack player Hannah Schmitt has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Loyola University.

Schmitt was an Honorable Mention All-American and the Catholic League MVP last year. She helped the Patriots claim their ninth straight league championship and advance to the second round of the first Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament.

Schmitt also was a first-team All-Catholic and second-team All-Phillylacrosse.com choice. She played on the Philly 2 team at the National Tournament in May and played on the Philly squad that placed third in the Under Armour Underclassmen Games in June.

Schmitt, who plays club lacrosse for the Phantastix, tallied a team-high 54 goals last year for the Patriots. She chose Loyola ahead of Maryland and Penn State.

“I got to visit each school two times, and I liked Loyola from the beginning,” she said. “First of all, I liked the amazing coaches. I got to know (head coach) Jen Adams. They are building a beautiful stadium, which will be one of the top stadiums in the country.”

Adams, in her first year at the helm, led Loyola to an 11-6 campaign in 2009. Adams was three-time All-American at Maryland and a four-time National champion who plays for the Australian National team.

At Loyola, Schmitt will join Carroll grad Cara Filippelli, who earned First Team All-Big East honors last year as a sophomore. Schmitt, who boasts a 3.8 GPA, is undecided on a major.

“The campus is beautiful,” she said. “With the trolley train, you easily can get anywhere. Being in Maryland and near Baltimore is an awesome place for lacrosse.”

Schmitt also os excited about the 2010 season. Carroll will shoot for its 10th straight league crown under coach Lorraine Beers. Last year the Patriots started slowly but jelled as a team in mid-season and defeated Archbishop Wood for the league crown.

“I guess we wanted to keep up with our high expectations,” she said. “We wanted to win the Catholic League for coach Beers and for the seniors, and we really clicked well as a team.”
