Villa Maria Academy senior midfielder Julie Mongan has made a commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Yale University.
Mongan was a starter last year for the Hurricanes, who finished 16-3, reached the finals of the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies while advancing to the second round of the District 1 tournament.
Mongan, who plays club lacrosse for SEPA, also was a four-year starter for the Villa Maria soccer team (she earned all-league honors for a team that reached the second round of districts) and originally planned to play soccer in college until Yale and head coach Anne Phillips (former coach at Owen J. Roberts and Franklin & Marshall) entered the picture late in the game.
“Actually, soccer was always what I wanted to go to school for until this happened,” Mongan said. “I was looking at Gettysburg for soccer and then Yale swept me away
“Actually she (Phillips) contacted me first. I had no intention of going there until she e-mailed me and asked me to come to camp. I went there and I really loved it. The campus is gorgeous and everybody seems all connected and gets along.”
Mongan plans to major in Economics and perhaps minor in Finance. She will join Episcopal Academy senior Ashley McCormick at Yale.
“We actually played on the same soccer team for a year or two,” Mongan said. “I didn’t know she had committed until I went to camp (in the summer).”
Mongan also has four siblings who have played four different sports at the Division I level: Billy (Princeton men’s heavyweight rower), Terry (Lehigh field hockey and swimming), Megan (Bucknell senior, swimming) and Allie (Bucknell sophomore, lacrosse).
“We all started out with the basics; soccer and stuff like that, and then as grew up went into different things,” she said. “We all supported each other.”
Mongan will need to provide much support this year for Villa Maria, which lost a large group of seniors.
“I think we’re starting out kind of new since we lost like 12 seniors,” Mongan said.
