Team Heather Leigh Albert (HLA), a team featuring six Philly girls and a Philly coach, suffered a heartbreaking 9-8 double-overtime loss to Heroes (Md.) in the finals of the Girls’ U-19 Gold Division (elite) Wednesday at the Vail Shootout.
The HLA team had four players from the state championship team at Radnor – Kelyn Freedman, Allie Martin, Courtney Campbell and Alyssa Dunlap – as well as Taylor Trimble (Episcopal Academy) and Courtney Caputo (Springside School). The team was coached by Radnor assistant Brooke Fritz and St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes’ (Va.) coach Cathy Jenkins.
Freedman, who recently was named MaxPreps National Player of the Year, was selected as the tournament MVP and Trimble also made all-tourney. HLA was tied with the Heroes, 5-5, at halftime, and fell behind, 8-5, before making a furious comeback to send it into overtime with three goals in the final six minutes.
Meanwhile, PLA Express, out of Chester County, won the fifth-place game Wednesday by defeating Midwestern Force, 11-10, in overtime.
