Murphy also spent community service hours teaching Spanish to elementary school students in Chester last year, served as a volunteer at a Vacation Bible School, and, through Student Council and Class Cabinet, fed the homeless and visted nursing homes.

This year Murphy has served as a captain for a team that is ranked No. 4 in the state and shared the Central League championship with Radnor and Springfield-Delco. The Panthers, seeded No. 4, play in the second round today at home against Abington today (4 p.m.).

Murphy will be attending nearby Swarthmore College. She aspires to major in Mathematics, and plans to play lacrosse.

For now, Murphy is focused on helping the Panthers challenge for the District 1 title.

“We have a lot to prove,” said Murphy. “We walk into every game and expect to win, it’s truly our motivation. (The fourth seed) is OK,;we like being the underdogs.”
