La Salle University women’s lacrosse coach Candace Taglianetti has announced the appointment of former Rutgers great Mallory Tornetta (Great Valley) as a graduate assistant coach.
“Mallory is a wonderful addition to our program,” Taglianetti said. “She is enthusiastic, energetic and has an incredible work ethic. Mallory was a standout player and leader for her Rutgers Lacrosse team and we expect her to utilize the skills she has learned as a player and a coach to make an immediate impact to our program.”
Tornetta, a 2009 Rutgers graduate, will help with the midfield and defensive units for the Explorers. She most recently served as a volunteer assistant coach, at Division III Farleigh Dickinson, as well as a Sports Performance Coach at Parisi Speed School.
“I am very excited to join the La Salle team,” Tornetta said. “With its competitive level of play and desire to win I am anxious to get started. I am very thankful for this opportunity and am thrilled to be apart of such a wonderful staff and team.”
A Communications major with a minor in Psychology, Tornetta started four years at midfield for the Scarlet Knights. She was named a three-time Big East Academic All Star.
While at Rutgers, Tornetta was also active on the student-athlete leadership council and served as the captain during 2007-2008.
Prior to her playing career at Rutgers, Tornetta was a field hockey and lacrosse standout at Great Valley under her father, Joe Tornetta. She helped the lacrosse team to the PA State Lacrosse Championships during both her freshman and senior campaigns. A two-time US Lacrosse All-American, Tornetta holds Great Valley’s record for career points (486) and career assists (227).
Tornetta joins a La Salle lacrosse program that is coming off a banner season in 2010. The Explorers tallied a program-high nine wins, including five conference victories, and secured a program-best No. 2 seed in the Atlantic 10 tournament.
