With possibly the strongest concentration of elite scholastic programs to play in one location this year, Haverford School will host the 2nd Annual “Checking for Cancer” Lacrosse Invitational, a 12-team event that was organized to help raise funds for cancer research and awareness for the three primary male related cancers; Prostate, Colorectal and Testicular.
Four of the nation’s top 25 teams (ranked by the Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse High School Power Ratings) will be competing, as well as the three top-rated teams from the PA Media Rankings. The invite will feature five Philly teams (Haverford School, Conestoga, La Salle, Radnor and Hatboro-Horsham) and seven teams from Connecticut (Darien, Fairfield Prep), New Jersey (Delbarton, Chatham), New York (Yorktown and Garden City), and Maryland (Georgetown Prep).
The invitational was founded after college teammates John Nostrant (head coach of Haverford School) and Kevin Giblin (head coach of Georgetown Prep) were both diagnosed with cancer within months of each other.
Nostrant, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer, has been deemed cancer free. Giblin, who was diagnosed with colon cancer, continues to make excellent progress in his treatments.
Both Nostrant and Giblin hope to make a difference by making others more aware of the risks of these diseases by educating the public on prevention and awareness.
“We have a unique opportunity here,” said Nostrant. “The tournament provides us a great venue to bring people to our campus to watch great games, and hopefully while they are here, they will spend a just little time at the information tents to learn how to protect themselves. Any family who has been affected by cancer will tell you early detection is critical”
The entrance fee is $5, and all proceeds will be donated to research and awareness related program. Last year’s proceeds were donated locally to UPenn’s cancer research programs.
