Scholastic boys: Minnich’s heroics lift Upper Merion to comeback win over Wissahickon and share of Sub 1 American lead

Luc Minnich scored the tying goal with 25 seconds to play and then the game-winner with 16 seconds left to give host Upper Merion a stunning 10-9 triumph over Wissahickon tonight, drawing the Vikings into a first-place tie in the Suburban One American Conference with the Trojans.

Both teams are now 11-2 in the conference with one game to play. Wissahickon (11-6) faces winless Upper Moreland in its final game, but Upper Merion (13-3) has to beat fourth-place Upper Dublin (9-4) to get its shot at a tie for the crown.

The Vikes, though, appeared out of it tonight when they fell behind, 9-5, midway through the final period. But they fought back to 9-8 and then with a minute left on a man-down situation, long stick middie Ryan Flansbury made a key takeaway and fed James Brennan coming out of the penalty area.

Brennan found Minnich (six goals) for the tying goal. Upper Merion then won the face-off and Minnich tacked on the game-winner.

Nate Hare added three goals and two assists for the Vikes while AJ Andersen scored four goals for the Trojans. Garret Rosiek added two goals and one assist and Nick Lucchesi had a goal and four assists for Wissahickon.
