Pat Brodie scored off a feed from Eric Waibel with 1:35 to play to lift host Avon Grove to an 8-7 victory today over Lower Merion in non-league boys’ lacrosse.
Tim Golder scored three goals and added one assist and Trevor Hornby added two goals and an assist for the Devils, who were playing in their opener. Lower Merion fell to 0-2.
Damian Sobieski added two goals for the Devils and goalie Tommy Malone (12 saves) made several key saves. AG’s Anthony DiNenno was strong at the face-off X, winning 14 of 18 draws. Team defense – led by poles Kevin Barrow, Matt Frey, Matt King, Darron Kushto – was a key in holding down the Aces’ vaunted attack.
Andrew Mongeluzzi scored three goals to lead the Aces while Joey Shallow had two goals and both Jordan Wolf and Ahmad Zachary each had a goal and an assist.
Bayard Rustin 7, Strath Haven 6
Brian Platt scored the game-winner with two minutes to play as the Golden Knights (2-0) surprised the Panthers – a team it lost to, 10-0, last year.
Connor Anunziato scored two goals for Rustin and goalie Joe Kelly was a standout, making seven of his 14 saves in the fourth period. Andrew McGreevy, Billy Miller, Peter Thiel and Trevor Thiel also scored for Rustin.
Mark Leonard and Mark Dolphin each scored two for Strah Haven, which fell to 0-2 with its second one-goal loss. Pat Fisher and Mac Cross also scored for the Panthers. Steve Broduer made nine saves in goal.
Downingtown West 6, Wissahickon 5
Ryan Higgins scored three goals, including the game-winner with 2:32 to play as the Whippets improved to 3-0.
Connor Mullen added two goals for Downingtown West and Tyler Rankel had a goal and an assist.
Brian Dick led the Trojans (0-2) with two goals and an assist while AJ Anderson had a goal and an assist and Nick Lucchesi, and Jeff Gebert each scored once. Brian Frankenfield and Shane Ziegler had assists and Sean Smith had 16 saves in goal.
Unionville 16, Archbishop Wood 7
Mike Nowoswiat poured in five goals and added an assist while Richard Kaiser had three goals and James Moss added two goals and two assists to lead the Indians (1-1) to the win.
Dan Mushnick added two goals and Billy Donovan contributed a goal and four assists while Max Kelly, Tommy Apruzzese and David Apruzzese each scored for Unionville.
Garnet Valley 20, Sun Valley 13
Mike Montella poured in five goals and Eric Warden had three goals and four assists as the Jaguars (2-0) seized a 13-1 lead and never looked back.
Sun Valley (1-1) was led by Kyle Gillam, who scored five goals. Brett Macaulay added three goals and an assist while Frankie Jackson had two goals and three assists and Bob Clemens had a goal and three assists.
Matt Cioeta and Sam Maldou each had a goal and an assist.
St. Joseph’s Prep 15, Albemarle (VA) 5
Cory Scheuerle, Jake O’Brien, Jeff Heath, Rob Watts, and Blaine Fleming each had two goals as the Hawks improved to 3-0 with a win in Virginia.
Brad James, John Gregitis, Steve O’Hara, Eric Medes, and Pat Swanick each had one goal for St. Joe’s and Liam Correia made five saves in goal.
Haverford High 11, Interboro 5
Mike Leyden tallied four goals to lift the Fords (2-1).
