Saturday’s boys’ roundup: Abington defeats Garnet Valley, Boyertown clinches playoff berth

Freshman Matt Rambo scored seven goals as Abington earned a 17-10 victory today over visiting Garnet Valley in a battle of teams ranked in the PA Media Rankings.

The Ghosts, ranked No. 4 in the PIAA Poll, improved to 16-1 with their 15th straight victory. The Jaguars, ranked No. 5, dropped to 11-4. The contest was a rematch of a contest last year in the District 1 tournament when Garnet Valley defeated Abington, 11-10, to secure the final state berth for the district.

Anthony Hensley and Joey Jones each scored three goals for the Ghosts while Jesse McGinley made nine saves. Thde Ghosts scored 11 gols in the second half.

For Garnet Valley, Mike Montella and Ricky Lehman each scored four goals.

Boyertown 11, Owen J. Roberts 9

The Bears wrapped up the fourth and final PAC-10 playoff berth by defeating the Wildcats as Matt Straface made 24 saves – 10 in the final period – and added two assists while Matt Salvetti had five goals and two assists. Alex Millard added four goals and one assist.

Episcopal Academy 11, Penn Charter 10

Tyler Olsen scored the game-winner with just over a minute left and Tyler Odell pumped in five goals as the Churchmen remained in the hunt for the Inter-Ac League title.

EA improved to 4-2 in the league, one-half game behind Malvern Prep (5-2) and tied with Haverford School. EA (13-4) plays at Haverford School on Tuesday and closes its regular season next Saturday against Germantown Academy.

Chase Growney added three goals and two assists for EA.

Andy Grabowski had five goals and two assists for PC while Tyler White scored three goals. The Quakers rallied from an 8-5 deficit with five consecutive goals, but EA scored the game’s final three goals.

Hill School 10, Hun School (NJ) 9

PJ Mara scored the game-winner when a shot by Ted Wolter bounced in off his helmet in overtime, lifting the Blues to 8-6 overall.

Nate Smith-Ide had four goals and Brendan Francis added two goals and two assists while Wolter had two goals. Mara had a goal and three assists.

Unionville 17, Marple Newtown 4

Richard Kaiser had five goals and one assists to lead the Indians to the non-league win.

Ridley 10, Wissahickon 2

Kyle Blakemore collected five goals and one assist as the Green Raiders toppled the Trojans.

Pennsbury 11, Plymouth Whitemarsh 7

Josh Caven had four goals and four assists and Tim Considine scored three goals to lift the Falcons (15-1) to the non-league win. Pennsbury needs to win at Abington to forge a tie for the Suburban One National Conference title.

Colin Joka scored three goals for PW,

Upper Darby 12, Souderton 7

The Royals took a 5-2 lead into halftime and kept it going to beat the Indians.

Bryan Ziegler and Ridge Schultz scored two goals each and Lee Stiles had a goal and two assists for Souderton (10-6). Nick Judge and Graham Gedman added single scores.

Bishop Shanahan 7, Kennett 5

Michael Thompson had four goals and one assist and Pete Marion added two goals and one assist for the Eagles in the Ches-Mont win.

Also, Jim Stanley and Chris Cordivari combined for seven groundballs and goalie Kyle Sullivan garnered six saves and three groundballs for Shanahan.

Spring-Ford 11, Great Valley 10

Drew Thomas scored three goals to lead the Rams (17-1) to the non-league win as they gear for the PAC-10 playoffs.
