PLA releases All-Star roster for game vs. US Men’s National Team Friday at Lehigh

The Philadelphia Lacrosse Association (PLA) has released its hand-picked roster for a special exhibition game against the United States National Team Friday at Lehigh University (8 p.m.).

The PLA squad features a number of Philly products as well as standouts from around the country, many of whom are still playing at the college level and others who now play at the club level.

The game is being played to help Team USA prepares for the World Championship games next month in Manchester, England. Tickets for Friday’s game can be purchased online at palacrosse.com.

The game will be held at the Banko Field at the Ulrich Sports Complex on the Lehigh campus in Bethlehem.

The PLA All Star team is being coached by John Nostrant (Haverford School). Assistants are Chris McNichol (General Manager of the Philadelphia based GMH Post Collegiate Men’s Club Lacrosse Team) and Dave Metzbower (former Associate Head Coach, Princeton University, now assistant at Haverford School). The selection of the Philly team was overseen by Chris Hupfeldt (General Manager of the 2006 US Men’s National Team).

The PLA All-Star team features Philly players Matt Mackrides (Penn State/Malvern Prep) and Kyle Wharton (Johns Hopkins/Haverford School) at attack; and John Haldy (Virginia/Haverford School), Kevin Kaminski (Strath Haven/Delaware), Chris Layne (North Carolina/Malvern Prep), Rob McCallion (Episcopal Academy/Army) and Ryan Cranston (Lynchburg grad/Henderson/GMH) at midfield.

The defense features Brett Moyer (Ridley/Hofstra/Philadelphia Wings/GMH), Mike Bronzino (Conestoga/Cornell), and Dan Honeywell (Lehigh grad/GMH). The face-off specialist is the University of Delaware’s Dan Cooney.

One of the two goalies is Mark Manos (Salesianum School/West Chester), a third-team All-American this year for Drexel.

The US team features many Philly players, including midfielder Kevin Cassese, the Lehigh head coach and former Duke standout. Others include goalie Brian Dougherty (Episcopal Academy/Maryland/GMH), defenseman Kyle Sweeney (Springfield-Delco/Georgetown/Philadelphia Wings/Boston Cannons), defenseman D.J. Driscoll (Malvern Prep/Notre Dame/ Chicago Machine), face-off specialist Alex Smith (Univ. of Delaware/Washington Bayhawks), defenseman Shawn Nadelen (Philadelphia Wings/Johns Hopkins/Towson associate coach) and attackman Drew Westervelt (UMBC/Philadelphia Wings/Denver Outlaws One of the Team USA assistants is La Sale College High assistant and former Wings great and head coach Tony Resch.
