From Press Releases

Penn State men’s lacrosse head coach Jeff Tambroni has announced that junior Matt Mackrides (Malvern Prep), senior Matt Bernier (Malvern Prep) and senior Matt Shankoff (Flemington, N.J.) will serve as tri-captains for the 2011 season. The new Nittany Lion mentor made the announcement as the fall practice season winds down.

“Our staff is thrilled to announce the captains of the 2011 Penn State lacrosse team,” Tambroni said. “These three young men have led by example from the moment they stepped on campus this fall and we are confident that they will continue this trend throughout the year. Our captains will shoulder a tremendous responsibility but we are confident that they will respond appropriately and that they will lead the Penn State lacrosse program with great pride.”

Mackrides, an attackman, led Penn State in scoring last year with 36 goals and eight assists for 44 points. A two year letter winner at PSU, Mackrides heads into his junior year with 72 points off 51 goals and 21 assists. He was a first team All-Colonial Athletic Association pick in 2010.

Bernier, a defender, has been a three-year staple on the Penn State defense. He scored his first career goal last season and has 88 career ground balls as well. Bernier was a second team All-Colonial Athletic Association pick in 2010.

Shankoff, a defensive midfielder, has played in 38 games during his three letter winning years at Penn State. He has seven career points off two goals and seven points to go along with 50 career ground balls.

The Nittany Lions will host a scrimmage on Sunday, October 3, at 2 p.m. against Maryland-Baltimore County. The scrimmage will take place on the Multi-Sport Facility field, directly across University Drive from Holuba Hall.
