North Carolina freshman midfielder Emily Garrity (Strath Haven) has been named the womenslacrosse.com National Rookie of the Week.
Garrity helped the Tar Heels to a pair of victories on the week. In a 12-6 win over Vanderbilt, Garrity had a hat trick and added two draw controls and two groundballs. In a 19-7 win over Richmond, she added a goal, three draw controls and a caused turnover. Garrity was the Phillylacrosse.com Player of the Year in 2009.
The Tar Heels are 3-0 and ranked No. 4 this week in the IWLCA Poll.
The Honor Roll picks included Drexel’s Katie Lawson and Navy’s Kathy Young (Villa Maria Academy). Both Lawson (Colonial Athletic Association) and Young (Patriot League) were honored this week by their respectuve leagues. Lawson was Player of the Week and Young was Rookie of the Week.
Lawson totaled 11 goals and four assists through the Dragons’ first three games. Her 3.67 goals per game and 5.00 points per game led the conference. In addition to the CAA honor, the senior was also named to womenslacrosse.com’s weekly honor roll. Lawson shares the conference honor with William & Mary’s Sarah Jonson.
Young is averaging four points per game and currently leads all Navy rookies with nine goals on 13 shots and seven assists. Young has registered multiple points in every game this season (with four or more points in three of those games), highlighted by her six-point (4 g, 2 a) outing against Robert Morris (14-4 win).
In Sunday’s 17-10 win over Longwood, Young recorded her second collegiate hat trick and finished with five points and three draw controls. Along with a great tenacity, she has displayed a tremendously accurate shot, scoring on a team-leading 69.2 percent of her shot attempts.
