In 2010, West Chester’s women’s lacrosse team returned to the NCAA Division II championship game for the eighth time in 10 years.
The Golden Rams (19-2) failed to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title, but stunned No. 2 and PSAC rival Lock Haven, 9-8 in overtime on a goal by Jackie Hoover (Cheltenham).
The Rams would fall to Adelphi, 17-7, in the championship game, but the drive to the finals was the No. 17 Top Story for 2010 in Philly lacrosse as chosen by Phillylacrosse.com.
West Chester was led by first Team All-American defender Katy Crouse (Boyertown) as well as first team All-PSAC picks Nicole Haines (attack/Great Valley) and Lauren Tatios (defender/West Chester East). Also, coach Ginny Martino was named the South Region Coach of the Year. Martino has an amazing 191-42 record (.820 percentage) in her 13 years at West Chester.
Also in 2010 in the Philly women’s college scene, Penn won its fourth straight Ivy League crown and finished 15-4 before bowing to eventual champion Maryland in the NCAA quarterfinals. Quaker senior Ali DeLuca (midfield) was named first-team All-America while sophomore Erin Brennan (attack) and senior Emma Spiro were both named third-team All-Americas.
Also in Division II, Holy Family went from winning no games as a first-year program in 2009 to winning 10 games and reaching the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference finals in 2010. Junior attack Jennifer James (Little Flower) scored 56 goals while freshman Stephanie McNesby (Archbishop Ryan) was named as the CACC Rookie of the Year and sophomore goalie Melissa Jenkins (Interboro) was an honorable mention all-league pick.
In Division III, Cabrini College won the Colonial States Athletic Conference title as senior Amanda Alexandrowicz (Ridley) scored 64 goals and senior Erin Nollen (Henderson) added 55.
