Middletown (Md.) junior defenseman Dan Goldstein has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Villanova University.
Goldstein was a key member of a Knights team that went 13-5 last year and reached the state semifinals in the Class 2A/3A division (midsize schools). He joins teammate and junior attackman Johnny Gallaway, who recently committed to Villanova and coach Michael Corrado.
“It came down to Villanova and Princeton,” said Goldstein. “I wanted to go to a well- known school for academics and I thought it would be a good opportunity.
“I really like the coaches a lot and I like the way they coach defense. I want to play for someone that will make me better.”
Goldstein said he has gone to Villanova summer camps and been coached by, among others, former Wildcats great Eddie DiDonato.
His commitment is one of several big additions for the Wildcats. Recently, Villanova got a verbal commitment from Foxboro (Mass.) goalie Greg Stamatov. Also, Delbarton (N.J.) midfielder Kieran Kenny has committed to Villanova from the class of 2012.
Goldstein said he was thrilled that he and Gallaway would be playing college lacrosse together.
“They recruited both of us, but we didn’t know about it until the end of the summer,” said Goldstein, who may study Psychology but also is trying to get accepted into the Business school. “We talked about it a little and thought it would be cool if we both went.”
Middletown should be a power in 2011, Goldstein said.
“We have a lot of kids returning as well as a lot of younger players that have stepped up and put in their work over the summer,” he said. “Our defense should be pretty solid.”
