Team Warrior used a four-goal run in the final 4:05 of the second half today to defeat Mesa Fresh 2010 by a 10-8 score in the semifinals of the Elite Division in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions at Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Albany recruit Miles Thompson scored two of his four goals in the game during the home stretch for Warrior, while brother and fellow Albany recruit, Lyle, assisted on three of the team’s four tallies to secure the victory.

“That showed some heart, coming back from two goals [down] and winning by two,” said Mark Burnham, head coach of Team Warrior.

In a game that included four ties and four lead-changes, Lyle Thompson (2g, 5a) won key face-offs late in the second half to gain extra possessions for Team Warrior. On the game’s final score with 11 seconds remaining, Thompson fed brother Miles on the crease. Miles Thompson put an exclamation point on the victory by scoring a behind-the-back, between-the-legs goal.

Chase Growney (Episcopal Academy/committed to Trinity College, CT) led Mesa Fresh 2010 with three goals, while Max Siskind (Henderson/Towson) had two goals and one assist. Liam O’Conner (Haverford School/Notre Dame) won 17 of 20 face-offs and scored once for Mesa Fresh while Tanner Scott (Conestoga/Duke) and Ryan Lord (Conestoga/Maryland) added one goal each.

Team Warrior later fell, 11-10, to Edge Senior Elite in the championship as game MVP Matt Worlidge scored the game-winner one minute into overtime.

Philly’s Rebel Elite finished in sixth place. Rebel Eite, which fell in the quarterfinals Saturday, handled Edge Jr., 20-2, in the first round of the winners’ bracket consolations and then fell to Krunch (N.Y.), 9-7, in the fifth-place game.

In the Rising Stars Division, Mesa Fresh 2012 fell to Burning River (Ohio), 9-7, in the semifinals. Copperheads Black defeated Burning River, 6-4, in the title game.
