Freshman Lauren Mateja (Upper Merion) was honored by the East Coast Conference today as the Goalkeeper of the Week. The honor covers the beginning of the season, and includes all games through March 7, 2010.
Mateja led the first-year Mavericks to a 2-0 start, earning wins against Manhattanville, 16-9, and Holy Family University, 14-5, in Philadelphia on Saturday.
Against the Valiants, Mateja made eight saves, including back-to-back stops during a scramble in front of the Mercy goal. Her poise helped settle down the defense as Mercy won in the first game in program history.
At Holy Family, playing in front of her hometown crowd, she made seven saves to earn her second win in as many games.
For the week, she posted a .516 save percentage and a goals against average of 7.00.
Mercy will play host to Bentley on Wednesday, March 10, at 1:00 p.m. at SUNY Purchase. The game will be the first home game in Mercy history.
