Spring-Ford senior attackman Drew Thomas has committed to play Division III lacrosse at York College.
Thomas was one of Philly’s top scorers in 2010, collecting 70 goals and 40 assists, while earning First Team Pioneer Athletic Conference honors. He helped the Rams reach the finals of the PAC-10 tournament for the fourth straight year, finish 19-3 and claim their first post-season (District 1 or Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association) playoff win ever.
Thomas played club lacrosse for PYLA’s Team Philly (Montgomery County) last year, and Black Bear (Montgomery County) in years prior.
Thomas also plays running back/receiver for the Rams’ football team and has a team-high 13 touchdowns.
Thomas considered several Division I colleges, but liked the small-school atmosphere and coaching staff at York. He also was focused on his education.
“My search for schools was limited because I want to major in Mechanical Engineering,” said Thomas, an Honor Roll student. “Then a family friend recommended we look at York College. Until then we were focused on Pittsburgh and Penn State.
“I like the smaller school atmosphere and class sizes at York College. I also like the structure of the Mechanical Engineering program with the multiple internships. I feel York will prepare me for success as an adult.”
York went 7-9 last year under coach Jim Griffin.
“The York lacrosse program should be a good fit for me,” Thomas said. “I like the style of lacrosse that York plays. I like to play aggressively and that’s the style coach Griffin coaches.
“I also believe the coaching staff at York is committed to building toward a D3 championship. The Capital Athletic Conference has some of the best D3 lacrosse schools and I look forward to great competition. I like the facilities at York, the Grumbacher Center is impressive.”
Thomas – who has 93 career goals – is one of several key seniors returning for the Rams. One senior, fellow attackman Brian Bock, has committed to Division I Lafayette.
Thomas is confident Spring-Ford has the weapons to regain the PAC-10 crown (last won in 2007) from three-time champion Owen J. Roberts.
“Each year Spring-Ford is has improved and I believe this year will be one of our best,” he said. “With our whole attack core returning and a lot of support from our sturdy midfielders and defense, I expect nothing less then a run at a PAC-10 title and to continue that through the District 1 playoffs.”
