Radnor senior midfielder Charlie Rubin has made a commitment to play Division III lacrosse at defending NCAA champion Tufts University.

Rubin had 10 goals and 10 assists last year for the Red Raiders, who went 13-9 and reached the District 1 quarterfinals. Rubin’s season highlight came in the second round of district play when he scored the game-winner in the third overtime of the Raiders’ 9-8 second-round win over league rival Ridley.

Rubin, who plays club lacrosse for Competitive Edge, Mesa Fresh 2011 and the Long Island Sting, will join a Tufts team that defeated Salisbury, 9-6, in the Division III title game. Tufts is coached by Mike Daly.

“I was looking for a school that had good academics and if I decided that lacrosse didn’t work out,” Rubin said. “I wanted to land in a situation where I could excel academically and not sacrifice lacrosse competition.

“I was fortunate enough to land with Tufts – the defending national champion – and a terrific academic school.”

Rubin, a consistent Honor Roll student, is undecided on a major. He said he loves the location of Tufts, just outside Boston, in Medford.

“The coaches put it on me, rather than pressuring a decision out of me,” Rubin said. “I also like that it’s seven miles outside of Boston. It’s a suburban school, but not too far from the city. I can go to Boston, but also I can fall back to retreat at Tufts.”

Rubin has high expectations for the 2011 season. The Red Raiders now have four seniors committed to playing college lacrosse; the others are attackman Jeff Puckette (Division I, Penn), attackman Tyler Murkley (D3, Lynchburg) and defenseman Jeff Michaelson (D3, Merchant Marine).

“We have some big shoes to fill with the loss of some of our most important players,” said Rubin. “We don’t have a lot of seniors, but we have a lot of depth and athleticism We have enough athletes to go to.”
