Recent Pennsbury graduate Shawn Caven (midfielder/face-off specialist) has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Ursinus College.
Caven was a first-team Suburban One National Conference selection for a Falcons team that finished 17-3 and reached the second round of the District 1 playoffs in 2010.
Caven had 27 goals and 26 assists while winning more than 75 percent of his face-offs. Caven, who played club lacrosse for Twist, was a three-year first-team pick and is a member of the National Honor Society.
At Ursinus, Caven, joins a deep and talented list of Philly recruits for second-year Bears coach Jamie Steele. The other include Malvern Prep’s Scott Hueber (attackman), Mike Irvine (defenseman) and Dylan Spangenberg (midfielder), Lower Merion’s Nile Thompson (midfielder) and Ari Weisband (defenseman), Bishop Shanahan’s Jordan McGinty and Jim Stanley (midfielders), Conestoga’s Dan Cohen (defenseman), Springfield-Delco’s Jordan Demcher (attackman), and Mechanicsburg’s Ercol Acri (Team HEADstrong club/midfielder).
“Coach Steele was a huge factor,” said Caven. “My older brother (Joey) was recruited by him at Widener.
“I was getting some looks at the D1 level, but I decided that wasn’t for me. Ursinus has great academics and an up-and-coming lacrosse program. There is a lot of solid talent, especially from the Philly area. And it’s close to home.”
Caven will major in Politics and seek to earn his pre-law requisites.
Caven said the Pennsbury program has made remarkable improvement in his four years and is poised to become a legitimate power.
“It’s been an unbelievable ride to see the program built from literally nothing to one that now makes the playoffs and is winning playoff games,” he said. “We’ve beaten teams we never beat before and that have really put us on the map. With the coaching staff there, I think they can take it to the next level.”
