Lansdale Catholic senior attackman Liam Malley has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Gwynedd Mercy College.
Malley scored 47 goals last year, helping Lansdale Catholic reach the Catholic League playoffs and finish 13-5. He was named as a second-team pick in the All-Catholic League Northern Division.
Malley, who has 111 goals in his career, plays club lacrosse for Twist.
He chose Gwynedd Mercy, a second-year program, based on its coaches and strong nursing program.
“The overnight kind of did it for me,” he said. “The team was really great and the coach (Dana Lindstrom) is awesome
“They just got a brand new stadium with turf and they have a really good nursing program. Also, I knew some of the guys on the team from playing with them in club lacrosse or playing against them. They helped me to know more about the program.”
Gwuynedd went a respectable 7-9 last year and is off to a 5-2 start.
Malley chose the field of nursing because he appreciated what nurses did for him when he suffered a neck injury as a freshman.
“I was in the hospital for a few days and I ended up enjoying it,” he said. “What the nurses were doing was cool and I looked into it and decided that’s what I wanted to do.”
Malley, who earned first-team All-Pioneer Athletic Conference honors as a sophomore, said the Crusaders are inexperienced this year. But he remains optimistic.
“Our goal for this year is to win a playoff game,” he said. “We want to top what we did last year. We graduated eight starters, so obviously there are a lot of questions coming into this year.
“But so far people have really stepped up, including the freshmen. and we’re looking pretty good.”
