Conestoga senior goalie Peter Zonino has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I lacrosse at Hobart College.

Zonino was a Third Team All-Phillylacrosse.com pick last year for a Pioneers team that won the first District 1 championship and reached the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association finals.

Zonino, who also played for the Mesa Fesh 2010 club that recently placed fourth in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions in Florida, liked the academics, the Hobart lacrosse history and the setting at its Geneva, N.Y, campus.

“I choose Hobart because it suited my academic needs,” he said. “The campus is beautiful and right on a lake. I also liked the school because of its great lacrosse history of success.

“It’s known as the oldest of lacrosse schools in the country and I wanted to be a part of its tradition. Coach (T.W.) Johnson also influenced me to go there because of his great personality and outlook on the game.”

Zonino, who has been on the Honor Roll al four years at Conestoga, said playing for Mesa Fresh 2010 was a great experience because many members of the team have played together for years.

“The Dick’s tournament was a great way to end our Mesa career,” he said. “We played some of our best lacrosse and had an awesome time in Florida. Everyone was kind of sad after the tournament just because we won’t be we playing with each other in a while, but at the same time we had a blast and made some of our best friends and memories that will last a lifetime. We hope to continue playing with Mesa, through summer league.”

Now, Zonino is focused on helping Conestoga (24-2 last year) get back to the state finals. In 2009, the Pioneers won the Central League crown with a perfect 11-0 mark and fell to defending champion La Salle, 7-3, in the PIAA finals.

The team returns seven Division I signees, three juniors that have committed to Division I colleges and six more than have committed to Division III schools or club teams.

“Everyone is really excited for the 2010 season just because we have such high expectations for ourselves,” Zonino said. “We got a taste of the state championship and we want to go back.

“Everyone has been working and training nonstop for this upcoming season. With all this said, we cannot take anyone lightly because everyone is a competitor in this league. We’re all looking forward to great competition this year; like Springfield-Delco, Haverford School, Darien and Landon. This senior class is really special because we’ve been playing together for most of our lives, so we want to go out with a boom and something to remember.”
