Conestoga senior defenseman/LSM Austin Campbell has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Denison University.

Campbell was a second-team All-Central League pick this year, helping the Pioneers finish 24-2 and claim the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) championship.

Campbell, who played club lacrosse for Mesa Fresh 2010, visited Denison, located in Granville, Ohio, last summer. After speaking to Dan Maude, a Haverford School grad who graduated from Denison last year, Campbell made his choice. Campbell plans to major in history.

“One of my main reasons for choosing Denison was because I talked to Dan Maude the day after I visited the school in the summer,” said Campbell. “He graduated from Haverford and played at Denison he told me that he loved the school and that his teammates at Denison were a lot like the kids from our area.”

Denison is coached by veteran Michael Caravana, who led the Big Red to a 10-4 record. Denison was eliminated in the NCAA tournament in the second round by Cabrini College.

“It doesn’t hurt that I have family in the Midwest,” Campbell said. “My older brother Packy is at Ohio State and my sister, Brooke, goes to Louisville. I’m really looking forward to playing for coach Caravana next year.”

Campbell said the 2010 season at Conestoga was special for many reasons.

“I couldn’t be happier about the way our season ended this year,” he said. “We all had a lot of fun together and we won a lot of big games. I’m really going to miss high school lacrosse. It’s good to know that we made some Conestoga lacrosse alumni proud, too.”
