Cardinal O’Hara senior midfielder Barry Downes, Jr. has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Wesley College (Del.).
Downes was an Honorable Mention All-Catholic League Southern division pick in 2010 when he scored 28 goals. He helped the Lions finish 10-10 and reach the semifinals of the Catholic League playoffs.
Downes, who plays club lacrosse for the Delaware Silverbacks, plans to study Environmental Science and Criminal Justice, and become a Wildlife Conversation Officer.
“I chose Wesley for many reasons,” he said. “I really liked the school and the coach (Bill Gorrow) from previous experiences. When I went on my overnight visit, I got to know the team and really liked them.
“Also I felt like I could attend Wesley and be successful. And lastly, the location of Wesley is far enough to get away from home but close enough to be able to go home if I need to.”
Downes said the Lions expect to contend again in the Catholic League this year.
“Last year we were a competitive team in the Catholic League,” he said. “And although we graduated a few crucial seniors, I think we will still contend for the title in the 2011 season.”
