Defenseman Ken Clausen (Hill School) had six groundballs and a caused turnover and midfielder John Haldy (Haverford School) had one goal and a groundball to lead top-seeded Virginia to a 10-9 triumph over eighth-seeded Stony Brook in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday in front of 10,024 spectators at Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium.
Virginia (16-1) advances to the team’s third straight Men’s Lacrosse Championship and a semifinal matchup with Duke on Saturday, May 29 at M&T Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
Clausen – a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist – said the Cavaliers have endured tremendous adversity since the death of women’s player Yeardley Love and the arrest of UVA player George Huguely.
“I think we’ve been through a lot,” Clausen said. “Kind of our motto has been that we don’t want this thing to end. With everything that’s been going on, and lacrosse aside, we want to be able to stick together as a team and going out there and playing for the girls and playing for Yeardley, that’s been in our minds and it’s been some motivation for us and we’re ready to keep playing hard and stick together for another week.
Bronzino (Conestoga) leads Cornell to semifinals
Freshman defenseman Mike Bronzino (Conestoga) scored his first goal of the season and added two groundballs and a caused turnover as a starter to help the Big Red dominate Army, 14-5, in the quarterfinals. Bronzino, who has played in only five games, became a starter in the playoffs.
Rob McCallion (Episcopal Academy) had an assist for the Black Knights.
Creighton (Malvern Prep), Felicetti (CB East) help Notre Dame stun Maryland
Senior defenseman Mike Creighton (Malvern Prep) had an assist as well as two groundballs and two caused turnovers while Adam Felicetti (Central Bucks East) added two groundballs off the bench to help unseeded Notre Dame to a 7-5 upset over Maryland in the quarterfinals on Saturday. The Irish will meet Cornell in the semifinals.
Wigrizer (Haverford School) helps Duke reach semis
Freshman goalie Dan Wigrizer (Haverford School) had three saves and yielded three goals in just under a half of play off the bench for the Blue Devils in their 17-9 quarterfinal win over North Carolina.
Mooney (Interboro) helps Salisbury men reach D3 finals
Defenseman Nick Mooney (Interboro) had two groundballs and two caused turnovers to help Salisbury defeated Stevenson, 14-13, in overtime Sunday and advance to the Division III championship.
A Mike Winter goal with two minutes left in OT gave Salisbury the victory. The SeaGulls will play Tufts University in Baltimore on May 30.
