Great Valley’s Binstein, a leader on the field, signs with American

Great Valley senior defender Lauren Binstein has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I lacrosse at American University.

Binstein, who has been named co-captain for the 2010 season, has helped the Patriots reach districts the past three years. During her sophomore year, Binstein was a member of a team that finished 19-4 and reached the District 1 Class AA championship game.

Binstein, who is leaning toward studying education, chose American because of its location. “I really liked the fact that it wasn’t right in the city,” she said. “It had a non-city feel, but then the city is right there too.”

Binstein said he built a good rapport with American coach Katie Woods and felt comfortable during her visits. “I felt like I could really connect with the team and all the girls were really nice,” she said.

Binstein will be joined by three other Philly girls in the senior class that have signed with American: Archbishop Carroll’s Genni Hull, Springside School’s Nicole Lombardo and Pennridge’s Emily Maher. Binstein is the one of two seniors from Great Valley signed to play Division I lacrosse, along with midfielder Colleen O’Malley (Louisville).

Last year Great Valley finished 12-7 and reached the second round of District 1 play. Binstein believes her team can contend for the Ches-Mont League title in 2010.

“I am hoping to be league champions again this year,” she said. “We only lost three seniors and we are a pretty old and stable team.

“I feel like I am a leader on the team,” said Binstein. “I am counted on to keep things flowing defensively, and for communication.”
