Drexel men’s team releases schedule for 2011

From Press Releases

Eight home games at Vidas Field and road games against two NCAA semifinalists highlight the Drexel men’s lacrosse 2011 schedule. The Dragons, who finished 10-5 a year ago, will face five teams that advanced to last season’s NCAA Tournament.

The Dragons open the season on Feb. 19 at the University of Virginia. The Cavaliers came within a goal of reaching the NCAA Finals a year ago. Drexel will also make a visit to South Bend, Ind., to face Notre Dame. The Irish, who advanced to the NCAA title game a year ago, will look to avenge last season’s 7-6 loss to the Dragons at Vidas Field. Drexel’s only other non-conference road game will be at St. John’s during the final weekend of the season.

Vidas Field will be a busy place early in the season as the Dragons will have played six home games by the end of March. Albany comes to Philadelphia during the last week of February and three days later, Big East-foe Villanova makes its way into the city. Drexel will also have non-conference home games with Mount St. Mary’s, the MAAC Champion, Bryant and Lafayette.

The Colonial Athletic Association schedule opens early this year as newcomer Saint Joseph’s travels across town to face the Dragons on March 9. After playing three more non-conference games, the Dragons get into the heart of the CAA schedule on March 26 with a road trip to Hofstra. Delaware and Towson will also come to West Philadelphia for league games. Those contests are sandwiched around road trips to Penn State and UMass.

Coach Brian Voelker is now in his second season at Drexel. His team returns seven starters from a squad that had four wins against teams ranked in the top 10 nationally in 2010.
