From Press Releases

If there was any question that Penn was going to be the dominant team in Wednesday night’s men’s lacrosse meeting with Saint Joseph’s, it did not take long to answer.

Try five seconds.

That’s how long it took for the Quakers (3-2) to score their first goal. The second goal came 50 seconds later. The third came 40 seconds after that. The Quakers were off and running, and they never looked back in downing the Hawks, 16-5, at Franklin Field in first-year head coach Mike Murphy’s home debut.

Penn’s lead was 9-0 after the first quarter, and after Saint Joseph’s (0-6) scored the first goal of the second quarter the Quakers reeled off five more before halftime. The third and fourth quarters were a chance to get some younger and less experienced players some action, and after Penn scored the only goal of the third quarter to make it 15-1, SJU outscored the Red and Blue 4-1 in the final stanza.

Freshman Rob Fitzpatrick led the scoring parade for Penn, scoring four times. John Conneely scored three times, while Al Kohart had two goals and two assists. In all, nine different players found the net with shots.

All four goals on Penn’s roster played a quarter in the game. Chris Casey got the start and made three saves without allowing to goal. He was credited with the win. Joe Hegener made three stops in the second quarter, Ted Rawlings (Malvern Prep) had three saves without allowing a goal in the third quarter, and freshman Brendan Engelke had four saves in the final stanza.

Sean Evans (Henderson), Steve Dunn (Malvern Prep), Geoff DeSoye, Mark Anton and Kyle Williams each scored once for the Hawks.

Penn returns to action Saturday afternoon, hosting Villanova at 3 p.m. on Franklin Field.
