The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) is one step away from drastically reducing the number of state berths for District 1 in the next two-year cycle of lacrosse tournament play.
After a second reading of the PIAA Board of Directors meeting Thursday and Friday, the PIAA board released its preliminary brackets for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 years.
If this reading is officially passed in May, District 1 will have only five boys’ berths after having seven in the first two seasons of PIAA play. Due to a rise in the number of teams around the state, two spots would be lost to districts (2/4 and 6/10) that did not have berths in the current two-year cycle that ends this year.
The boys’ breakdown would be: District 1 (five teams), District 3 (four teams), District 7 (three teams), District 12 (one team), District 11 (one team), Districts 2/4 (one team) and Districts 6/10 (one team).
The number of berths is based solely on the amount of teams that compete in each district; no weight is given to strength of the region or schedule.
The girls’ brackets, if passed, would stay the same for Philly teams. District 1 will still have seven teams and Districts 11 and 12 will have one team each, while District 3 will drop to three and District 7 will drop to two while Districts 2/4 and 6/10 would have one berth each for the first time.
